Dental crowns for healthy smiles

The “crown” is the portion of your tooth that is visible above your gum line. Dental crowns are among the most popular treatments offered by dentists. The dental crown can be ideally shaped and colored to match the existing teeth.  A dental crown can be fabricated with porcelain or gold. It is then fitted directly over the damaged tooth or to cover any cosmetic flaws. Dental crowns are also used in other procedures such as dental implants or dental bridges and root canal treatment.

Dental crowns help repair teeth that are damaged above the gumline, broken, or worn down. The dental crown is cemented onto the tooth after the tooth has been prepared to receive it.

Types of Dental Crowns

Rugby Dental Arts offers a choice of dental crowns, depending on patient needs, restorations needed, and mouth placement. Dental crowns can be color matched to your existing teeth.  However, if there are space limitations a gold crown may be recommended.  If this occurs the crown will be gold in color.

Dentists tend to use all-ceramic or all-porcelain crowns most often, as they are strong and found to be less prone to failure.  They also look and function as a real tooth.  If prepared and fabricated correctly, most people cannot tell that they even have a dental crown.

Gold crowns are used mostly on the back teeth where they are less visible and where space may be a limited.  Although gold is not a preferred color, the metal is stronger than other materials allowing for the crown to be made thinner.  This is extremely favorable in those areas that don’t have sufficient vertical space. Stainless steel crowns are used only on a temporary basis, mainly on baby teeth in children.

The least popular dental crown are porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns.  These crowns need to be thicker to allow for two materials (the metal base and the porcelain cover).  The porcelain on these crowns are more prone to chip and break over time.
